It’s tough being a pale, Rubenesque Chick at a pool party with Fitness Chicks. While they’re rocking their itsy bitsy teeny weenie bikinis, I’m sporting shorts and a tankini top desparately hoping that the dark colors of my ensemble hide a multitude of sins.
Naturally, the Fitness Chicks are not only fit and thin, they’re also well tanned. As they bemoan their lack of tanning oil, I’m applying a thick layer of SPF 50 sunscreen.
I love my Fitness Chick friends and admire them for their dedication to health and fitness, but I wish they would join me in my enthusiasm for protection against the sun’s harmful rays. Though none of them is fair like me, we all are at risk for melanoma.
The good folks at Ageless Derma were kind enough to recognize the plight of pale folk like me and created Daily Mineral Guard Sunscreen. The product is mineral based, which makes for a non-greasy, somewhat thick formula that’s a little kinder and gentler than the average facial sunscreen. I received a tube of it in exchange for my honest review.
I did not have this product when the Fitness Chicks got together for the pool party, but I brought it along when the Big Man and I vacationed on the Chesapeake Bay in July. The weather was sunny with temps in the mid- to upper-nineties, and the house we rented had a wonderful built-in swimming pool that was the perfect antidote to the heat.
We arrived in the afternoon and after settling in, immediately headed to the pool. I used a spray sunscreen with an SPF of 50 to cover my body and Ageless Derma for my face. I may have been a tad overzealous with the Ageless Derma on my first application as the National Association of Mimes is now trying to recruit me. The product has titanium dioxide, a mineral that helps protect the skin from UVA and UVB radiation. Since titanium dioxide is white and Ageless Derma has a generous amount of it, trust me when I say that a light application of the product is sufficient.I considered taking up a career as a mime after my initial application of Daily Mineral Guard Sunscreen.
Ageless Derma Daily Mineral Guard Sunscreen has an SPF of 25. It is thick and non-greasy and could easily be worn daily under makeup. We are all supposed to wear sunscreen daily. Mime-type application aside, it protected my face very well to the point where I wasn’t even pink after several hours outdoors. I will admit, however, that I reapplied regularly and especially after spending time in the pool.
The Big Man decided to sample some, too. He works primarily outdoors and has a tan from April through November, but he, too, was concerned about burning up in the strong rays of the midsummer sun. He gave Ageless Derma his seal of approval in the form of a grunt when I asked if he liked it.
Apparently this product is very popular, as it’s out of stock on the manufacturer’s web site. Cost for a 4 oz tube is $32. Since a little goes a long way, this should last the average person most of the summer season. The product boasts lots of other good-for-you benefits, but I can’t attest to these. I will definitely use Ageless Derma Daily Mineral Guard Sunscreen again.
I may even try to coax the Fitness Chicks into giving it a try.
UPDATE March, 2014: I’ve removed the links to this product per the web site’s request. I believe it is no longer available. However, I still recommend using sunscreen regularly in whatever form you choose.
