Top 10 List of Happy Songs

September 26, 2010

John Denver can have his Rocky Mountains and sunshine on his shoulders, all I need is some Chicken Fried and a little R-e-s-p-e-c-t.

Music is pretty powerful stuff. Who needs therapy when you’ve got tunes to help you through the good times and the bad. Music can take you back to another time and place. It can remind you of old loves.

Vienna waits for you, Paul.

Don't stop believin', Todd.

A veritable time capsule of cheese. Naturally, these were all the loves of my life when I was still in diapers, because I couldn’t possibly be THAT old!

Music can help you get through the loss of a love, too.

Breaking up is hard to do.

(I always found that I could best wallow in self pity by lying on the floor with my head between the speakers, the sound turned up to blasting, and a box of tissues at the ready. For a double whammy, follow up Time for Me to Fly with a couple rounds of Roll With the Changes. Badabing, badaboom, heartache gone.)

Music can make you nervous—think Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween. Or sad (He Stopped Loving Her Today, George Jones). It can motivate you (Gonna Fly Now, Theme from Rocky).

Who doesn't want to climb those steps in Philly like Rocky did?

But it’s the tunes that make me happy that I like the best. I’m talking a pure, natural, happy happy joy joy feeling here. None of that teen angst or emo stuff. These tunes make you want to get up and dance and belt out the lyrics at the top of your lungs. I love tunes that do that. Just ask my neighbors. They get treated to a free concert and dance recital every time I’m outside doing yard work with my Ipod strapped to my arm. Sometimes I like to add a solo on the air drums and air piano as a special treat.

So here’s my happy list. These tunes are guaranteed to make me smile.

The Chick’s Top Ten List of Happy Tunes

  1. Chicken Fried, Zac Brown Band
  2. Respect, Aretha Franklin
  3. Burning Love, Elvis Presley
  4. Mmm Bop, Hanson
  5. In the Mood, Glenn Miller Orchestra
  6. A Little Bit is Better Than Nada, Texas Tornados
  7. Haven’t Met You Yet, Michael Buble
  8. I Feel Lucky, Mary Chapin Carpenter
  9. I’m Gonna Be (500 miles), The Proclaimers
  10. It’s Raining Men, The Weather Girls

I see your eyes rolling and that look of vomitus eruptus on your face! So what if most of these songs didn’t win a Grammy. This is my little pot of musical gold. I’ll bet you’ve got one of these tunes playing in your head right now, don’t you? It’ll probably be there all day.

Don’t worry, be happy!

What’s on your happy happy joy joy playlist?

Beautiful Day by U2. I’m still thinking of some other ones.
